Published on July 18 2012

Recreation and Leisure Studies professor Garrett Hutson has won Brock University Student Union’s (BUSU) award that recognizes commitment from professors to teaching excellence and above all- the students they teach.

Hutson's style of teaching elevates the students he teaches to motivate, inspire and cultivate creative thinking inside and in the “outdoor” classroom.

"His energy, authenticity and ability to engage students in all types of learning situations is remarkable," says Tim O'Connell, Associate Professor and Chair of the Department of Recreation and Leisure Studies.

"I consistently hear students asking Garrett what he will be teaching in the future so they can be sure to enroll in his courses. To me, this is a definitive sign that students appreciate Dr. Hutson's approach to teaching."

Students from each faculty were encouraged to send in nominations for professors, TA’s, and lab instructors that they felt best exemplified teaching excellence at Brock.

The program is run through the Vice-President, University Affairs (VPUA) office of BUSU and has been recognizing teaching excellence since 2009.

The award is designed to recognize teaching faculty that have the ability to communicate and connect with their students to provide an enriching environment.

"Each of these professors are excellent teachers & highly respected by the students in their programs, “ says Steven Nicholls, Brock University Student Union VPUA. “

“Their enthusiasm for the subject matter and ability to relate to students has lead each to develop their own personalized style of instruction”.
