Annual Main Campus Switch from Heating to Cooling
Posted April 14, 2015
Facilities Management trade staff are busy preparing the Main Campus cooling systems at the central chilling plant for summer operation. Due to the type of heating and cooling system that is used here at Brock University many buildings on the Main Campus are not capable of heating and cooling during the same cycle. With the arrival of unseasonably warm temperatures and with outside temperatures at night remaining below 10 degrees Celsius, building heating at this time of year still remains a priority. As we experience typical spring time daily cycles of low night time temperatures and higher day time temperatures, some areas on the Main Campus will experience higher than normal temperatures during regular office hours. Facilities Management staff will continue to make the Main Campus as comfortable as possible by bringing in cool fresh air into the areas that are normally cooled by the central chilling plant unit until night time heating is no longer required.

If your area experiences cooling issues please refrain from operating any heat producing equipment which is not necessary and shut off any lighting that is not required. Offices with windows should close blinds when possible to keep out radiant heat.

If your area is experiencing any extreme or ongoing cooling issues please notify Facilities Management at x3717 or facilitiesmanagement@brocku.ca or David McArthur, Associate Director, Maintenance & Utilities at dmcarthur@brocku.ca so the situation may be investigated.

Information Regarding Cluster Flies - Schmon Tower

Posted October 20, 2014
Every spring and fall the occupants in the Schmon Tower notice an increase of flies. These flies are Cluster flies and they typically live outdoors. In the fall they migrate towards warmth and in the spring they attempt to return to the outdoors. These flies are different than the house fly which consumes trash and debris. They do not carry disease and are not in the building due to poor housekeeping, but are seeking warmth. Their larvae consume earth worms to survive and adults feed on plant material. As such, these flies do not multiply while they are indoors.

Repair work to the exterior caulking and window sealing to help prevent the immigration of the flies has been identified on the University’s Deferred Maintenance list, but the work is not anticipated to start this year. In the meantime, Custodial Services will be cleaning the window sills in the Schmon Tower on a routine basis. Per discussions with Health, Safety & Wellness, fly treatment will not be applied. The cluster flies have a short life span and the solution only shortens their life span by a day. Fly strips are available upon request by contacting Facilities Management Customer Service at facilities.management@brocku.ca

If you have any comments please contact Bryan Cober, Structural Services Manager at x3290 or at bcober@brocku.ca.
