Initial Teacher Education: General Admission Criteria
The Fall 2015 Teacher Education application deadline has been extended to January 8, 2015. The submission date for documents and the Experience Profile (for those that apply by January 8) has moved to January 15, 2015. Brock University’s Initial Teacher Education programs (Bachelor of Education) provide candidates with the professional education necessary to become certified teachers in Ontario. A "consecutive" program is offered for individuals who already have an undergraduate degree. The program is two years in length and is offered at two campuses: the main St. Catharines campus and a campus in Hamilton.
Brock’s program offers the following teaching divisions:
- Primary/Junior (B10): grades K – 6
- Junior/Intermediate (B20): grades 4 – 10
- Intermediate/Senior (B30): grades 9 – 12

Minimum Admission Requirements
Spaces in the Teacher Education program are limited, and admission is not guaranteed by fulfilling the minimum requirements. If you are a mature student you must meet the same requirements as all other applicants and will not be individually reviewed.
The minimum requirements for consideration are:
- Your admission average.** Brock requires a minimum “B” average, equivalent to 70 percent at Brock, based on the best 10 full undergraduate degree level credits. These 10 credits must be complete at the time of application. The academic average accounts for 50 percent of the admission decision.
- Experience Profile. This accounts for 50 percent of the admission decision. (For more information, see the Experience Profile section of the web site.
- Teachable subject credits (for Junior/Intermediate (B20) and Intermediate/Senior (B30) applicants ONLY, for more info see Division specific criteria of the web page).
** (ii) Your undergraduate degree must be completed no later than April 2015; A full undergraduate university (degree level) credit is the equivalent of one academic year of study. For example, a full university course normally runs from September to April, or it is the equivalent of two semester long courses.
(iii) Only those credits completed at the undergraduate degree level within an acceptable undergraduate degree program are used to calculate admission averages. College diploma credits assigned as advanced standing in a degree program will not be used for these purposes.
(iv) Some preference is given to applicants with graduate level qualifications.
Division Specific Admission Criteria
Primary/Junior (B10) – Admission Information
You are encouraged to have an area of concentration related to school curriculum. Some preference is given to Primary/Junior (B10) applicants with a major in Child and Youth Studies.
Preference is given to Primary/Junior (B10) applicants who, at the time of application, present completed university degree level courses (half or full credit) in one or more of Mathematics, Science and/or English.
Junior/Intermediate (B20) – Admission Information
You must have the equivalent of at least three full undergraduate credits, averaging 75 percent, in one of the teaching subject areas listed. At least one full undergraduate credit must be at the second year level or above. At a minimum, two out of three* teaching subject credits must be completed by December 15, 2014. Credits completed after April 2015 are not considered.
*Teachable subject credits not completed by the application deadline must show as ‘in progress’ on the transcript submitted at the time of application.

Preference is given to Junior/Intermediate (B20) applicants who, at the time of application, present completed university degree level courses (half or full credit) in one or more of Mathematics, Science and/or English.
Junior/Intermediate (B20) applicants normally practice teach at the Grade 4-8 levels. Placements at the secondary school level (Grades 9 and 10) will only be made under special circumstances.
Intermediate/Senior (B30) – Admission Information
You must have the equivalent of at least five full undergraduate credits, averaging 75 percent, in one teaching subject area and three full undergraduate credits, averaging 70 percent, in a second teaching subject area as listed. For the first teaching subject, at least three of the five undergraduate credits must be at the year two level or above. For the second teaching subject, at least one of the three undergraduate credits must be at the year two level or above. At a minimum, three out of five* first teaching subject credits must be completed by December 15, 2014. At a minimum, two out of three* second teaching subject credits must be completed by December 15, 2014. Credits completed after April 2015 are not considered.
*Teachable subject credits not completed by the application deadline must show as ‘in progress’ on the transcript submitted at the time of application.

Due to limited capacity, not all subjects may be offered in any one year and, given the Faculty’s need to respond to teacher shortages, special priority may be given to areas of high need.
Clarification of Teachable Subjects
Dramatic Arts, Intermediate/Senior (B30) and Junior/Intermediate (B20):
Undergraduate course credits in creativity based practical work with a reflective component are required (e.g.: acting, performance, production). For a first or a second teaching subject, a maximum of one undergraduate credit in theory based courses, the History of Theatre, Drama, or Dramatic Literature, is allowed.
English, Intermediate/Senior (B30):
As a first teaching subject, a minimum of one undergraduate credit in English literature or poetry is required. The remaining four credits can be a combination of literature, poetry, and writing. At least one undergraduate credit in Canadian content is preferred. As a second teaching subject, a minimum of one undergraduate credit in English literature or poetry is required. The remaining two credits can be a combination of literature, poetry, and writing. At least one undergraduate credit in Canadian content is preferred. Note: Credits completed in English as a Second Language courses are not acceptable. In cases where this is not clear, Brock University has the right to request course descriptions.
English, Junior/Intermediate (B20):
A minimum of one undergraduate credit in English literature or poetry is required. The remaining two credits can be a combination of literature, poetry, and writing. At least one undergraduate credit in Canadian content is preferred. Note: Credits completed in English as a Second Language courses are not acceptable. In cases where this is not clear, Brock University has the right to request course descriptions.
French as a Second Language, Intermediate/Senior (B30) and Junior/Intermediate (B20):
As a first or second teaching subject, a minimum of two undergraduate credits must be in grammar/composition. All credits must be taught in the French language. A maximum of one undergraduate credit may be in Translation. Introductory level language courses are not considered toward teaching subject requirements.
Geography, Intermediate/Senior (B30) and Junior/Intermediate (B20):
As a first or second teaching subject, you must have one half of an undergraduate credit in Canadian Geography. (This Canadian Geography credit must fall under the Geography department listing in the appropriate course calendar, or be cross listed as a Geography credit.) A maximum of one undergraduate credit in Earth Sciences/Environmental Studies is allowed.
Health and Physical Education, Intermediate/Senior (B30):
As a first teaching subject, you must present the equivalent of two undergraduate Physical Education credits that are action based (examples can be found on Brock’s website at brocku.ca/webcal/2014/undergrad/pekn.html#PEKN_1P90, and include PEKN 1P93, PEKN 2P00, PEKN 2P03, PEKN 2P06, PEKN 2P92, PEKN 3P00, PEKN 3P13, PEKN 4F93 PEKN 4P00), two Health Studies undergraduate credits, and one undergraduate credit from Kinesiology, Health Studies or Physical Education. As a second teaching subject, you must present two undergraduate Physical Education credits that are action based and one undergraduate credit in Health Studies.
Health and Physical Education, Junior/Intermediate (B20):
You must present two undergraduate Physical Education credits that are action based (examples can be found on Brock’s website at brocku.ca/webcal/2014/undergrad/pekn.html#PEKN_1P90, and include PEKN 1P93, PEKN 2P00, PEKN 2P03, PEKN 2P06, PEKN 2P92, PEKN 3P00, PEKN 3P13, PEKN 4F93 PEKN 4P00) and one undergraduate credit in Health Studies.
History, Intermediate/Senior (B30) and Junior/Intermediate (B20):
As a first or second teaching subject, you must have one undergraduate credit in Canadian History. A maximum of one undergraduate credit in the History of Art or Greek/Roman Civilization is allowed. All remaining History credits, including the Canadian History credit, must fall under the History department listing in the appropriate course calendar, or be cross-listed as a History credit. Canadian Politics and Canadian Studies courses are not acceptable.
Mathematics, Intermediate/Senior (B30):
As a first teaching subject, a maximum of two undergraduate credits in Statistics are allowed. As a second teaching subject, a maximum of one undergraduate credit in Statistics is allowed.
Mathematics, Junior/Intermediate (B20):
A maximum of one undergraduate credit in Statistics is allowed.
Music – Vocal, Junior/Intermediate (B20):
A maximum of one undergraduate credit from the History of Music is allowed.
Science – Biology, Intermediate/Senior (B30):
As a first or second teaching subject, a maximum of one undergraduate credit in Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry or Biomechanics is allowed.
Science – General, Intermediate/Senior (B30):
As a first teaching subject, three undergraduate credits must be from Biology, Chemistry or Physics (including Astronomy) with a minimum of two credits in one subject and one credit in one of the remaining subjects. The remaining two credits may be from any of these subjects, or from Earth Sciences or Environmental Science. If you wish to declare Physics, Chemistry or Biology as a second teaching subject, you may do so only with the Science subject not used for the Science – General teaching subject. For example: Science – General using two biology credits and one chemistry credit; neither Biology nor Chemistry may be declared as a second teachable subject. As a second teaching subject, two undergraduate credits in one subject must be from Biology, Chemistry or Physics (including Astronomy). The remaining credit may be from one of these subjects not used or from Earth Sciences or Environmental Science. If you wish to declare Physics, Chemistry or Biology as a first teaching subject, you may only do so if the science subject is not used for the Science – General teaching subject.
Science – General, Junior/Intermediate (B20):
Two undergraduate credits in one subject must be from Biology, Chemistry or Physics (including Astronomy). The remaining credit may be from one of these subjects not used or from Earth Sciences or Environmental Science.
Science – Physics, Intermediate/Senior (B30):
As a first teaching subject, all five undergraduate credits must be in Physics related to: forces and motion; energy, work, power, matter and energy; waves – light and sound; electricity, magnetism, gravitation; hydraulic and pneumatic systems. A maximum of one credit in Astronomy is allowed. As a second teaching subject, all three undergraduate credits must be from the subject areas listed above (one undergraduate credit in Astronomy is allowed).
Visual Arts, Intermediate/Senior (B30) and Junior/Intermediate (B20):
Studio based course credits are required (e.g.: painting, sculpture, printmaking, drawing). A maximum of one undergraduate credit from Film, Photography, Architecture, Fashion or History of Art is allowed.
The minimum credential for admission is an undergraduate degree conferred by an acceptable university or other postsecondary institution as outlined below:
- In Canada, an acceptable university is one that is authorized to confer academic degrees under the laws of jurisdiction in which it operates.
- In Canada, an acceptable college is one that is authorized to confer degrees under the laws of jurisdiction in which it operates; the college must be publicly funded.
- In the United States, an acceptable university is one that is authorized to confer academic degrees under the laws of jurisdiction in which it operates. A university must be recognized by one of the following regional accreditation agencies: Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools; New England Association of Schools and Colleges; North Central Association of Colleges and Schools; Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities; Southern Association of Colleges and Schools; or Western Association of Schools and Colleges. The university must be considered equivalent to a university referred to in number 1.
- In a country other than Canada an acceptable university is one that is authorized to confer academic degrees under the laws of jurisdiction in which it operates. Typically, in the case of a country that is a member of the Commonwealth, the university is eligible for membership in the Association of Commonwealth Universities. For all other countries, eligibility for membership in the International Association of Universities is expected. A university must be considered equivalent to an institution referred to in number 1.
Important Note: Brock University reserves the right to determine if degrees granted by institutions in the above categories are suitable for the purpose of admission to Brock’s teacher education program.
English Language Proficiency Requirement
If English (learned and spoken in the home) is not your first language, you must submit evidence of English language proficiency. Please read our policy: brocku.ca/registrar/teacher-education/english-language-proficiency
Teacher Education is a professional program that requires an outstanding command of spoken and written English. For this reason Brock University reserves the right to request an English-language proficiency test result where it is believed one is warranted. You may be required to withdraw from the program if, after admission, you show an inadequate command of the English language.
Canadian citizens and permanent residents who are Aboriginal, members of visible minorities, or persons with a disability are encouraged to apply. If you meet the minimum admission requirements and feel you have been academically disadvantaged, outline your reasons in a personal statement. You may also be individually reviewed (see the appropriate section of the Experience Profile for details). If you have less than 70 percent on your top 10 full university credits, you will not be considered under the Accessibility Policy.
If you are admitted under this policy and meet the initial admission requirements, you are required to meet the same progression and graduation standards as other students.
Application Steps and Deadlines
Important Submission Deadlines: December 1, December 8, December 15.
- December 8, 2014: Teacher Education (TEAS) application (submitted via ouac.on.ca).
- December 8, 2014: Order official transcripts for all ONTARIO postsecondary institutions you attend(ed). Complete the TEAS Transcript Request Form (TRF) and submit it with the TEAS application. You must use the “IMMEDIATE” option when ordering this transcript. Brock graduates who apply to Brock University need not order or send Brock transcripts.
- December 15, 2014: Pay the TEAS application service fee (this includes the Brock supplementary non refundable $60 service fee).
- December 22, 2014: Submit all other transcripts directly from postsecondary institutions (that cannot be requested via the TEAS Transcript Request Form).
- December 22, 2014: Submit the Teacher Education Experience Profile at brocku.ca/registrar/teacher-education/initial-teacher-education/applicant-profile/
- December 22, 2014: Submit the English Language Proficiency Test (if required).
- December 22, 2014: Junior-Intermediate (B20) and Intermediate-Senior (B30) applicants only. Teachable subject credits not completed by the application deadline, must show as ‘in progress’ on the transcript submitted at the time of application. Indicating on the OUAC application that you are registered in a course is not sufficient proof. It is your responsibility to ensure that courses in progress show on the transcript sent by your institution.
Two 100-hour teaching-related experiences are required. Each experience must meet the following criteria:
- Significant and related to teaching
- Completed in schools or other community organizations
- Instructional in nature
- Profiles the applicant in a leadership position
- Verifiable by an immediate supervisor (not a relative or friend)
- Primary/Junior (B10) and Junior/Intermediate (B20) applicants should have some experience working with children and youth of the age group in the program to which you apply
- Intermediate/Senior (B30) applicants should have some experience in one of your teaching subjects
You may only access the Experience Profile AFTER you have submitted your application via TEAS.* Brock will send you an email to acknowledge receipt of your application. At this time you will be given your Campus ID, which you need to access the profile.
Accessing the Experience Profile:
- Wait to receive your Campus ID via Brock’s acknowledgment email
- Log on to ‘my.brocku.ca’ and click on 'Applicant, New, Returning Student or Alumni'
- Go to ‘Applicant & Student Self Service’ tab
- Access the Experience Profile via ‘Document Status’ tab
- You must SAVE every 10 minutes to avoid losing your work
- If you are having difficulties accessing the forms, you may need to adjust your ‘pop up blockers’ for the web browser you are using
- When you complete each of the required forms, you must close the form (X in the top right of page or use the close button at the end of the form) to return to the Student Self Service area. *Be sure to save your work first!
- We strongly recommend the use of Internet Explorer. DO NOT use Google Chrome

*You cannot access the Experience Profile until after we receive your application from OUAC. The TEAS application will be forwarded to Brock only after payment has been received by OUAC. If you are paying close to the December 8 payment deadline you should carefully consider your method of payment. Submitting International Documents /Applying as an International Student
If you are an international applicant, you must meet all the same application deadlines and procedures as a domestic applicant. Be sure to visit all admissions information on this web site for answers to your questions. This section ONLY addresses how to submit international documents correctly.
Brock University will accept international documents from any one of the following three sources:
Option 1: Official transcripts sent directly from the educational institution that granted the degree(s)/diploma(s). Attested copies, with appropriate institutional signatures (usually the University Registrar), are acceptable as long as they are issued and sent directly from the educational institution that granted the degree.
Option 2: The Ontario College of Teachers (OCT) (www.oct.ca) Some applicants may have already submitted international documents to the Ontario College of Teachers (OCT) prior to applying to Brock University. Please contact the OCT directly to have your documents sent.
Option 3: WES – World Education Service (www.wes.org) Many Ontario Faculties of Education accept documents and assessments from WES. It may be easier for you to submit one set of documents to WES and have them forward them to your universities of choice. Go to www.wes.org/ca/required/ for excellent guidelines regarding the submission of appropriate documents.
Notarized photocopies of documents in the possession of the applicant, and submitted directly by an applicant will NOT be accepted under any circumstances.
All received academic and academic-related documents become the property of the Brock Admissions Office and will not be returned. DO NOT SUBMIT ANY DOCUMENTS that you are unable to reorder from your academic institution.
Failure to provide appropriate academic information may result in an inaccurate assessment of your qualifications, or your file may be deemed incomplete and not assessed. Applicants for admission are required to submit the following documents and information for assessment:
- Official academic transcript(s) bearing the original institutional seal and/or signature in the original language confirming all post-secondary study. These transcripts must be sent directly from one of the three sources outlined above. The transcript should include:
- official confirmation regarding the years of study;
- official confirmation of the degree awarded, and the date the degree was awarded;
- official confirmation of the credit system or course weight;
- official confirmation of completed courses/subjects and grades.
- Original translations of all post-secondary academic documents that are produced by the granting institution. Original translations will be accepted from one of the following:
- the consulate, high commission or embassy to Canada of the country where the documents were issued;
- a Canadian embassy, consulate, high commission in the country from which you emigrated;
- a translator accredited by a professional association of translators in Canada. To obtain the name of an accredited translator contact the Association of Translators and Interpreters of Ontario (ATIO) at 1-800-234-5030 OR 613-241-2846 (email: email@example.com; web site: www.atio.on.ca;
- a translator who has received accreditation through a federal, provincial or municipal government in Canada;
- If the ATIO is unable to provide a translator for the language you require, you may contact COSTI-IIAS Immigrant Services at 416-651-1496, or email firstname.lastname@example.org.
The translator must include a photocopy of the original document(s) from which the translation was prepared, as well as an original statement indicating:
- that the translation is accurate and authentic;
- that the translator belongs to one of the categories listed above (identification number and/or seal, name, address, and telephone number required);
- printed name and signature of the translator.
Special Notes for those with International Documents:
If you are concerned that your international documents will not arrive by the deadline, you may bring your original copies to the Admissions Office and we will photocopy them and return the originals to you. THIS IS A TEMPORARY MEASURE ONLY. Original documents sent directly from the international institution must arrive in the Office of the Registrar, Admissions no later than the specified deadline.
It is the applicants’ responsibility to ensure all of the information requested as outlined above is included with the documents submitted for photocopying. The individual photocopying your documents will not have the knowledge to confirm proper documentation. Additionally, due to the high volume of documents that arrive at the Admissions Office leading up to the submission deadline, please use your applicant portal at my.brocku.ca to confirm if we have received your documents.
Some individuals will find it impossible to order a transcript directly from institutions where active warfare or natural disasters have or currently are occurring. In rare cases like this, the decision to allow applicants to bring their original documents to Brock for photocopying, and have admissibility determined using those documents, will be at the discretion of Admissions personnel. Exemptions to this policy are very rare and must be requested in writing prior to the submission deadline. Applicants should also be aware that standard policy in these cases is to attempt to verify documentation by contacting the institution that granted the degree.
If the above information is not printed on your academic transcript(s) or part of the transcript legend accompanying your transcript, the missing information must be provided in an original letter from your academic institution, along with a certified translation if the letter is in a language other than English. Submission of course descriptions where course content is not obvious may benefit the applicant in ensuring proper assessment of qualifications.

- How do I apply to the Consecutive Teacher Education program at Brock University? Use the TEAS application at ouac.on.ca/teas. At this site you will find detailed information regarding admissions requirements and will be able to download the Experience Profile package.
- What are the requirements for admission into the program? Details are outlined in this website. See above.
- When do sessions to the program begin and end? Can I begin the consecutive education program in second term (e.g. January/February) or during summer sessions?The program is 4 terms in total (Fall/Winter/Fall/Winter). Each term is approx. 4 months with Fall term typically starting in late August or early September and Winter term ending in May.
- How do I apply to the Hamilton campus? Applicants may indicate a preference of campus after admittance to the program (at the time you accept your offer). Your preference will be considered on a first-come, first-served basis. All applicants should be prepared to study at either campus. Specific subjects may be restricted to a specific campus.
- What is the cost of the Teacher Education program? For information on tuition and other fees, please refer to the Finance Office website: brocku.ca/finance, or you may contact the office directly at: email@example.com for details.
- If I have completed a Masters or PhD in addition to my undergraduate degree, which marks are used in tabulating my average for the academic component of my application? The minimum required average of 70% for the academic component is based on your best 10 full undergraduate credits only. Credits earned within a Masters or Doctoral program or degree will not be considered in the calculation of your average; however we do grant some preference in the overall assessment score for those that have a completed credential at the time of application. Masters or Doctoral courses may be eligible for consideration towards the teachable subject areas.
- How do I find out if the undergraduate courses I completed will satisfy my teachable subject(s) requirements? Our admissions staff cannot pre-assess nor pre-approve courses for application purposes. In order for a course credit to be eligible for consideration toward a particular teaching subject, as a general rule, it is best that they be presented from the teachable subject in question (i.e. if your teachable subject is mathematics, a course in political statistics or engineering will not be recognized). In most cases, only courses eligible to meet requirements for major programs can be counted in support of teachable subjects. There are exceptions. A course that is cross-listed can normally be used towards satisfying teaching subject requirements. Please refer to the admissions criteria section located at ouac.on.ca/teas or review information provided above in the ‘Clarification of Teachable Subjects’ section. If you have earned credits in specialized programs or in disciplines not consistent with the list of teachable subjects listed in our program information, please refer to the following guidelines:
- Review the particular credits you have earned to see if some courses may be eligible for consideration as an identified teachable subject.
- Check your academic calendar to determine if courses can be used to satisfy the degree requirements in that teaching subject. (ie. If some Geology courses at your university can be used to satisfy degree requirements in Biology, then you could use those credits to count towards your teaching subject).
- Contact the institution and particular department at which the credits were earned and request that they be reviewed for eligibility in another teachable subject area. (e.g. a Kinesiology course may be eligible for consideration as a Health and Physical Education credit or a Science credit)
- Ask that the Department or the Dean's Office issue a letter stating that the course has been assessed and deemed eligible for consideration as a credit towards a teachable subject.
- Submit this letter with a course description to the Admissions Office by the application deadline date. The admissions officers will not have course descriptions readily available from other institutions. Course assessments will be done on the basis of the documentation you provide at the time of application.
- One of my verifiers is from outside of Canada. Can I still use this person as a verifier? Yes, as long as you provide current contact information and the individual is easily accessible so that we can verify your experience with them.
- I live outside the Niagara/Hamilton area. Can I complete my placements in the district where I live? Candidates must complete their practica within the school boards with which we have partnerships. These boards are the District School Board of Niagara, the Niagara Catholic District School Board, the Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board, the Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic District School Board, the Halton District School Board, the Halton Catholic District School Board, the Grand Erie District School Board, the Peel District School Board, the Dufferin-Peel District School Board and designated schools within these boards. Any arrangements with outside boards must be made through your Faculty Advisors and the Out-of-Region Coordinator, and is conditional upon their approval.
- I am currently working in a school. Can I complete my practicum there? The Department of Teacher Education tries not to place candidates in schools where they have personal contacts due to potential conflicts of interest.
- I am interested in working with the Catholic school system after graduation. Can I complete my practicum placements in a Catholic school setting? Yes, you can. Upon acceptance into the Teacher Education Program candidates will be asked what school system they would like to practice teach in (Public or Catholic). That information is taken into consideration when candidates are placed in the Public or Catholic Cohort Groups. Once candidates are placed in Catholic Cohort Groups they complete their practica in the Catholic school system.
